SIGMA THETA TAU
The Kent State University College of Nursing Honors Organization was started in 1976 to meet requirements to
establish a local chapter of Sigma Theta Tau at Kent State. Interested faculty and students have closely followed
Sigma Theta Tau's guidelines in structuring this organization, writing bylaws, and selecting members to achieve this
purpose.
Sigma Theta Tau is the only national honor society for nursing. It is a member of the Association of College Honor
Societies. Constituent chapters are established in accredited collegiate Colleges of Nursing recognized by the
profession.
Sigma Theta Tau, the Initials of the Greek words Storga, Tharos, Tima meaning Love, Courage, and Honor, has as
its purpose the following:
- To recognize the achievement of superior quality scholarship.
- To recognize the development of leadership qualities.
- To foster high professional standards.
- To encourage and support research in nursing.
- To strengthen individual commitment to the
ideals and
purposes of the profession.
Students, both baccalaureate and graduate, may be inducted into the organization after the first semester of the
junior year and after having demonstrated superior academic performance and leadership potential.
The Honors Organization also recognizes distinguished members of the nursing profession as well as community
leaders who have contributed to nursing.
Information for application is usually available in November/December of each year.
The Honors Organization met all the requirements to apply for a Sigma Theta Tau chapter in May 1979. An "on site"
visit was made by Mrs. Helen Ference of the National Organization of Sigma Theta Tau. Her evaluation was
presented to the National Council of Sigma Theta Tau in July and approved by the House of Delegates at the biennial
Sigma Theta Tau Convention in November, 1979. In the Spring of 1980, the Kent State University Chapter, Delta
Xi,
inducted its first members.
