PROFESSIONAL NURSING JOURNALS
In addition to textbooks, students of nursing use a variety of contemporary, professional journals. These are
especially useful for learning new trends and updated practices in nursing.
All students in the College of Nursing and all pre-nursing students are strongly encouraged to subscribe to
The
American Journal of Nursing (AJN). The journal contains news of the nursing profession, the professionals who are
making the news, and activities of The American Nurses Association at national, state, and local levels.
AJN articles cover a wide span of subjects related to nursing as it is practiced in various settings. Many clinical
course references on all levels (Sophomore, junior, and Senior) are from AIN articles (published monthly).
Other journals with which students should become familiar include:
Advances in Nursing Science -- Focuses on issues of theory and the development of the discipline of nursing. Image
- published by Sigma Theta Tau and focuses on current theoretical and research issues.
Image -- The Journal of Nursing Scholarship published by Sigma Theta Tau.
Nursing Forum -- deals with topics of interest to nurses practicing in general acute care hospitals (published
monthly).
Nursing Clinics of North America -- published in hard bound editions. Each issue treats limited number of subjects
but does so in depth and from many points of view (published four times a year).
Nursing Outlook -- formerly was the official journal of the National League for Nursing. Articles are weighed toward
education, but it does contain many clinically oriented articles (published monthly).
Nursing Research -- articles written by researchers of nursing on studies related to all areas of nursing (published 6
times a year).
Nursing '00 - (name changes with current year) Magazine is written for the general staff nurse; articles closely
related to providing nursing care and to handling problems and conflicts that arise in staff nurse positions (published
monthly).
Nursing Digest -- includes condensed articles from journals of nursing and related fields (students should seek
original articles for references) published 10 times a year.
Online journal of Issues in Nursing - provides a forum to exchange opinions and information about topics that affect
nursing practice, research, and education. Published by the Kent State University College of Nursing in conjunction
with the American Nurses Association. Accessible on-line through http://www.nursingworld.org/ojin/olinhome.htm
