GUIDELINES FOR UNIVERSITY PROBATION AND DISMISSAL

The purpose of probation is to warn the student of the number of grade points which must be made up to continue enrollment and to be eligible for graduation. The probationary rules stated below will be strictly enforced, and failure to meet the rules pertaining to the five types of probation are as follows:

PROBATION 1 applies to any student who falls below 1.8 In any session. Normally the student Is permitted to continue on this probation provided the cumulative average stays above 2.00. If the student incurs such probation during the semester in which graduation requirements are completed, such probation is not removed.

PROBATION 2 applies to the student whose cumulative average falls below 2.00 and whose quality point deficiency is between one and five (please see "Grading System" in the General Catalog for information about averages and points) A student placed on Probation 2 is normally given two semesters to achieve the necessary 2.00 cumulative average provided his semester average does not fall below 2.00.

PROBATION 3 applies when a student's quality point deficiency is between six and ten. A student is normally given two semesters to achieve the level of Probation 2 or better provided the semester average does not fall below 2.00.

PROBATION 4 applies to the student with a quality point deficiency between eleven and fifteen. A student is normally given two semesters to achieve the level of Probation 3 provided the semester average does not fall below 2.00.

PROBATION 5 applies to any student, whatever the grade point average, who may be placed on probation when the student falls to make normal progress toward the degree because of a deficiency in requirements or course. This includes meeting of clinical course objectives or program objectives.

DISMISSAL

A student may be dismissed for academic deficiency when:

  1. The student does such poor academic or clinical work that continuation is, in the opinion of the Deans, unprofitable. Regardless of previous academic standing, such a student may be dropped immediately. (cf.Probation 5). Likewise, an upper-classman may be dismissed when their grade point deficiency is so great that probation as described above, would not permit graduation on a reasonable schedule.
  2. The student falls to meet the terms of probation; for example, if the student has been placed on Probation 3 and instead of the student improving the record, the student slips into Probation 4. Normally, dismissal follows.
  3. As a first semester freshman or transfer student, the student's grade point average falls below .50.
  4. The student enters the semester on probation or has a cumulative average below 2.00, and finishes the semester with a quality point deficiency of nineteen or more.
